Riyadh, KSA: As the worldwide nanotechnology market value is expected to reach $306 billion by 2025, the role of nanotechnology is shaping the future of the automotive aftermarket industry in Saudi Arabia. This was discussed in detail at Automechanika Riyadh, which concluded today at the Riyadh International Convention and Exhibition Centre (RICEC).

With the Kingdom’s extensive giga projects such as NEOM and the Red Sea Global striving to position themselves as global hubs for innovative and sustainable transportation solutions, and with 600,000+ vehicles estimated to be produced per year in the Kingdom, the technologies transforming the automotive industry are now in the spotlight.

According to Hesham Ahmed Mehani, Technical Office Director, O2ProFormance, who spoke at the Automechanika Riyadh Academy, nanotechnology can significantly impact the industry by improving vehicle durability, efficiency, and environmental sustainability. By replacing traditional materials, nano-engineered materials could significantly extend the life span of automotive parts, enhance fuel efficiency, help create stronger materials, and reduce emissions through design and manufacturing.

“The nano-revolution is more than a trend; it is a paradigm shift in automotive care and protection. Embracing nanotechnology redefines industry standards and elevates vehicle maintenance levels," Mehani added.

In Saudi Arabia, national standards bodies such as the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organisation (SASO) and the GCC Standardisation Organisation (GSO), both of whom have been represented by prominent speakers at Automechanika Riyadh, play an essential supporting role in helping to align nanotechnology applications with regional standards to foster innovation while ensuring safety and quality.

The automotive industry is also increasingly adopting nanotechnologies in real-life applications. A notable example is Hyundai, which signed a deal with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund to establish an auto plant worth over $500 million in the Kingdom. Hyundai recently introduced six nanotechnologies that would be crucial growth drivers in future mobility, ranging from self-healing polymer coating to radiative cooling films on car windows. These applications represent a significant step forward in the automotive industry and provide a glimpse of future possibilities.
